High Holy Days Meaning
As followers of Messiah Yeshua, we see deep and meaningful connections between the prophecies in the Tanakh and the observance of the Biblical feasts.
Yom Teruah (Day of Blowing)
“Blow the shofar in Tziyon! Sound an alarm on my holy mountain!” Let all living in the land tremble,
for the Day of Adonai is coming! (from Joel 2:1)
Yom Teruah alerts us that the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jeremiah 30:7) has commenced. Yeshua summed it up with these words, “For there will be trouble then worse than there has ever been from the beginning of the world until now, and there will be nothing like it again!” (Matthew 24:21)

Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)
“Blow the shofar in Tziyon! Proclaim a holy fast, call for a solemn assembly.” (Joel 2:15)
Yom Kippur is referred to in the prophets as “the Day of Adonai” and is described in Joel 2:31 as “hagadol” and “hanorah” (the great and terrible Day of the Lord). It is the holiest day of the year as it points us to the national repentance and redemption of Israel, the appearing of King Messiah who comes to take up his throne in Jerusalem, and Adonai’s fierce judgment against the nations who have come up against Israel to destroy his people in the Land.
Here is Yeshua’s description of this day:
“But immediately following the trouble of those times,
the sun will grow dark,
the moon will stop shining,
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the powers in heaven will be shaken.
“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, all the tribes of the Land will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with tremendous power and glory. He will send out his angels with a great shofar; and they will gather together his chosen people from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (Matthew 24:29-31)
Sukkot (Feast of Booths/Tabernacles)
You will eat until you are satisfied and will praise the name of Adonai your God, who has done with you such wonders. Then my people will never again be shamed. (Joel 2:26)
Sukkot is a seven-day festival at the end of the harvest that prophetically points us to the millennial reign of Messiah Yeshua on the throne of Melekh David (King David), as Ezekiel prophesied:
My servant David will be king over them, and all of them will have one shepherd; they will live by my rulings and keep and observe my regulations. They will live in the land I gave to Ya‘akov my servant, where your ancestors lived; they will live there — they, their children, and their grandchildren, forever; and David my servant will be their leader forever. I will make a covenant of peace with them, an everlasting covenant. I will give to them, increase their numbers, and set my sanctuary among them forever. My home will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people. The nations will know that I am Adonai, who sets Isra’el apart as holy, when my sanctuary is with them forever.’” (Ezekiel 37:24-28)
